Where things are on Apple’s map doesn’t always depend on where they actually are, it depends on when you happen to look. Now what do you do? Check Google Maps and Street View to get accurate information about what's where on Fell Street.Īt ground zero, a map has to do an excellent job performing the basic task of accurately showing you where things are. You tell your friend that Domport moved out and she insists it's still there. It's April and you discover that California Detailing has moved into the space where Domport used to be. You have some body work you need done so you check out Apple's map app to find out where Domport is. A friend tells you about the good experience she had at Domport Auto Body Service on Fell Street. Think about what this means from the user's point of view. Apple has them both occupying the same location and which one appears on the map depends on the month in which you look. Timbuk2 and La Boulangerie are side-by-side on Hayes Street. The same kind of thing is going on at the corner of Hayes and Octavia Streets at the upper left-hand corner of Patricia’s Green. Look at the map in March and it tells you Domport Auto Body Service is there. Instead, it shows all three businesses occupying the same location and it rotates which one it shows on the map in different months. Apple maps also shows all three but not in the way it should. There are three car-service businesses side-by-side in the block to the right of the Park on Fell, Domport Auto Body Service, Fell Street Auto Service, and California Detailing. Pay careful attention and you see that something different is going on.įell Street runs along the bottom of Patricia’s Green. It looks like Apple is doing a much better job of capturing changes in the neighborhood as businesses come and go.Īt least that’s what it looks like if you don’t look closely. The feature that really jumps out is that the icons for places and businesses change a lot more on the Apple map. More details emerge if you watch the months cycle through a couple of times.
